That Moaning Sound You Hear

…is fifty thousand unemployed writers wishing they’d done drugs with David Milch when they had the chance.
If you haven’t seen Deadwood, you’re missing out on what is, so far, some of the finest, most beautiful writing the 21st century has to offer – dense, rhythmic, and absolutely fucking genius in the way it uses syntax to give weight to the most villainous threats and most hysterical jokes. Syntax, people, syntax! To hear such attention placed on not just the words but the precise order in which the words come, like Shakespeare with a dire case of Tourette’s, it’s music to my fuckin’ ears.
This new project (a “surf noir” – no shit!) sounds like a close cousin to Brick, a high-school detective story that makes Veronica Mars look like Blue’s Clues. It’s the best film I’ve seen this year and one of the most promising debut features in a long time – it’s so good I’ve actually paid to see it in a theatre twice. I see a lot of movies in my role as itinerant critic-for-hire, and I recommend Brick unreservedly.
