The Wrong Turn And The $50 Bathtub

posted by Absinthe | 7:09 PM

I’ve fallen out of the habit of driving to Vegas, which is sort of a shame – it’s the perfect length for a mini-roadtrip, long enough to feel you’re actually getting somewhere, short enough that nobody gets restless in the car.

Anyway. I’ve apparently fallen so far out of the habit that I’m now capable of missing the turnoff to the 15, meaning that Kim and I drove about 15 miles closer to Palm Springs than you need to get before saying, “Seriously, what the FUCK?” Subconscious desire to have a slightly longer roadtrip, or just addle-brained piloting? I have a hunch.

Yesterday I was checking rates as I confirmed our reservation and realized that we should by rights be able to get a cheaper rate on a better suite than we actually booked in the first place. Which turns out not to be true, but feature creep set in anyway; we could take the room we originally booked for even less, or spend just an eensy bit more and get a bathtub in which one could, if one were possessed of adequate model ships, historical acumen and flashpaper, re-enact the Battle of Trafalgar.

Pretty easy to figure out what won that particular battle. I may have to bow out of the blogger tourney on account of excessive pruniness.

Off to cobble together something dinnerlike and then see if I remember how to play limit.

links from Technoratiand thirty minutes later I was on the road, heading for Sin City. The full moon rose to my right as the sun sank beneath the horizon on my left. The road was wide open the entire way, and I had a great drive across the Mojave desert. As my friend Ryan observed

If and when I drive, I take 14 and make a left at Mojave. That Inland Empire traffic is the suck.

      Er, right at Mojave.
