Just busted. Went fairly deep (617 entrants, I went out 55ish), but this is California poker, where outlasting 91% of the field gets you nothing. Which I’m fine with; make the money and you at least triple your buyin, and first prize was a dandy $65K or so.
I’d just about tripled up before the first break, but couldn’t get any traction after that. I ran AK into AA, bluffed nearly a quarter of my chips into third pair, lost a race with AK against QQ, then put my last money in under the gun with Tc3c. Ran into kings and AJ. I turned a flush and tripled up. Thankfully our table broke then.
Then I limped along for forever and a day. I maintained an M under 5 for three hours or so, mostly by not getting cards. Those of you who’ve seen me play a short stack know that I am not an advocate of sitting on your hands, but I had an incredible series of rags and a couple of loose players who loved to limp made it impossible to shove without laying too good a price. I doubled at one point with QQ, and once by shoving from the SB with Q6s against an MP limper; he was getting an incredible price and folded anyway. But I never pulled off the elusive double-double where you actually get a stack you can play with. I finally called off my last money with AT against AK. KQx flop but no suckout for me.
Tomorrow is limit, and therefore I might skip tomorrow. Since tonight’s field of 600-some was reduced by 90% in a matter of six hours of play, I’m thinking the limit game would be even more of a crapshoot. Even worse: a crapshoot with no fold equity.

I do not like any kind of limit poker…way too slow, no fold equity and no way to defend a decent hand (i.e. JJ) against some yahoo playing a s00ted K2. Could be worse. I jumped into a limit stud/8 tournament the other night, just because it was the only thing spinning up. In the paraphrased words of George Carlin, it was like watching flies fuck. Congrats on making it that deep, tho. Next time, man…next time.
