    Belay That

posted by Absinthe | 2:40 PM

It’s amazing how busy you can be when you’re not doing much of anything at all. My mental list of accomplishments over the past several weeks pretty much consists of “survived” and “occasionally ate more than one meal per day”. It’s not a lack of things to do so much as the absence of the notable; life has become mundane, which is a not-unwelcome change.

Playing poker takes focus and time, which is mostly going to Declan at the moment; while that means a greatly decreased winrate I expect it should pay off in intangibles down the road. Boy now rolls over at will and can talk himself to sleep when he feels like it, giggles when tickled, and is starting to freak out when held by strangers, all promising developmental signs. I predict that by Christmas he will weigh 48 pounds and run a 4.5 40-yard-dash, which seems reasonable given that he’s now nearly 3x his birth size. (Well, weight. Not height.)

Next month I’m starting a massive project that will send me off the grid for some time. No, it’s not a NaNo novel; it’s something intended for publication and actual human consumption. Hopefully it’ll be finished by January so the boy can edit and rewrite it before he goes off to Berkeley for spring semester. Seven months is average for college entrance these days, right? I just hope he learns to hold a pen before the SATs.

Time flies whether you’re having fun or not, so you might as well enjoy it. When there’s news fit to print it’ll be here.

Of course, five minutes later it was Alan this, Alan that, lookit this Alan!, AlanAlanAlanAlanAlanAlan. *Sigh* Maybe I’d do better with the next guy… though from whathis father had been saying latelyI wasn’t getting my hopes up. Somewhere around here on Sunday, in between Santa Barbara and LA, listening to the Silversun Pickups (seemed an appropriate playlist) top down on the convertible, is when the thought occurred to me that I really could
