    Monday Is For Lovers

posted by Absinthe | 4:30 PM

Well, I love these Mondays, anyway. The structure in the $1k events here is great – 3k in starting chips, 25/25 at the outset, one-hour levels. That makes for a full three hours of play before the M of a starting stack drops to 10, and five hours of play before the crush that starts mutilating stacks (when the blinds jump from 25/100/200 to 50/200/400). So I’m hunkering down for a long night.
Last night I started well but faltered near the end, when I couldn’t catch good on 4th, 5th or 6th to save my life. I had to fold once on 6th when we were boardlocked to chop if I made my low, but I’d bricked twice and couldn’t pay even one bet for a shot at half. Three times I was perfect underneath only to catch an obviously useless 9, T or J on 4th and 5th, and near the end I almost always had a middling up card without so much as a pair – good for dodging the bring-in but deadly to play.
I’m happy with the way I played – I got good value on my scoops and several times I managed to squeeze an extra half-bet out of a three-way pot on 7th, which is the closest thing to free money in a hi-lo game – but I just couldn’t win when it was time to gamble. Today that time is longer in coming, so hopefully I’ll be in better shape then.
