    Electionating

posted by Absinthe | 11:23 AM

Pseudo-liveblog, probably with big huge holes in it where instead of keeping the world safe for democracy, I keep the apartment safe for the boy.

7:50a: Awakened by raucousness and Baby Loves Jazz. Throw on clothes and say, “okay, let’s go vote.”

8:40a: They moved our polling place – instead of an apartment building lobby two blocks over it’s a church about a mile away. Longest line I’ve waited in at the polls since moving to CA, probably by an order of magnitude. Seven booths available, close to forty people in line. Umpteen ballot propositions don’t exactly make for a quick in-and-out voting experience.

9:15a: Vote quickly, then shepherd the boy outside while wife finishes up. No on 8 (bigotry sucks, kids!), yes on 1A (bring on the supertrains!), you can probably figure out my top-of-the-ticket choice. Trivia note: Have there ever been two black candidates on a Presidential ballot before?

9:24a: Start the walk back home. Give directions to polling place to three people we meet on the way.

10:04a: Arrive home, read boy a couple of stories before putting him down for a nap. Resist impulse to turn on any of the news networks, opting for a little time exploring the postapocalyptic wastelands of Fallout 3 instead.

11:07a: Nap over. Too short. This whole daylight saving time shift thing is for the birds. Not that the birds recognize it either. Except in certain parts of Indiana. Turned on some election coverage, but obviously nothing much is happening just yet – a whole lotta standing in line.

11:28a: I note that Fallout 3 is also the choice of ScurvyDog and Kurokitty.

11:48a: Probably a better speech than McCain’s given in a long time. Mostly because he didn’t use the word “maverick”. Advice, though: save something for the concession, guy.

11:57a: If any candidates want to go back in time and campaign on the Lots Of Free Blueberries platform, I might rush back to the polling place and change my vote. Otherwise I don’t see how I’m going to keep this boy fed.

1:23p: What’s a good, harmless way to give yourself an unrequested three-hour nap? Feel like I’m vibrating.

1:37p: While I was listening to the radio, TiVo decided recording Stand By Me was a better investment of its bandwidth.

3:20p: Probably should have stuck with AMC. But no, back to MSNBC. Real numbers coming in soon?

3:52p: 51 Obama, 48 McCain in Indiana? And the reverse of that in Kentucky – can Kentucky actually be that close?

4:09p: 50/50 in the KY Senate race. I would love to see McConnell hit the bricks.

4:15p: Not a real good suit for Olbermann. Which I can tell because I actually noticed it.

4:30p: Probably going to be a bad night to try to order a pizza. Hmm.

4:32p: Anyone know what the deal with the early, “banked” votes is? Are they divided by precinct and not counted until that particular precinct closes?

5:00p: PA for Obama. Not exactly the ballgame but definitely a lead going into the 9th.

5:56p: Chris Matthews, bless his befuddled giant head, has the line of the night so far, speaking to Tom DeLay: “I like the way you hate, sir.”

6:23p: OH for Obama. Now it’s just a question of what kind of victory it’s going to be.

7:11p: Break for bedtime. Going to run over to Village Pizzeria for a pie, then settle in to watch the Daily Show/Colbert Report special.

I’m more of the sneak-in-close-and-let-fly combat shotgun kind of guy, but I haven’t even seen a gatling laser yet. Maybe I’ll anticipate going for that kind of stuff on a second playthrough.
